Sales Tax Review

July 2006

From the Incoming President

Dear Members,

I consider it a privilege conferred upon me by all the members in electing me unanimously as the President of this unique Association. I, therefore, in the right earnest, start the interactions with the readers of this Journal. I would interact with all my members and subscribers through the pages of this esteemed Monthly, wherein I propose to deal with topical subjects every month. During the course of the year at my disposal, I shall try my best to work in the best interest of the profession at large and the Association in particular.

The outgoing President, Shri Ashwin Acharya, and my other predecessors have already laid down the direction to which the Association have to proceed.

In addition to the usual educational programmes, there are quite many suggestions which are slated to be considered by my new team. The team incidentally consist of enthusiastic and energetic young professionals eager to prove their mettle through their dedicated work.

Considering the academic aspect on top of the agenda, on 3rd August, 2006, the first study circle meeting would be inaugurated by Shri G. D. Parekh, Hon’ble President of the Maharashtra Sales Tax Tribunal. Our journey for better knowledge would begin with the address by Shri Firoze Andhyarujina, Senior Advocate, who would deal with the evergreen subject of ‘Levying tax on the intangible goods’. I hope all the readers would make it convenient to attend such a historical and educative programme.

Various committees, as in the past, are being formed so that each of them would take up their assignment at the earliest possible date.

One more programme have also been finalised. A joint seminar at Nagpur is scheduled for 5th August, 2006. At the said seminar, the amendments to MVAT Act through Ordinance No. 6 of 2006 and the rules would be discussed by eminent faculties from Mumbai as well as from Pune, Wardha and Nagpur.

I propose to arrange such programmes at district places as well, so as to have the first hand information about the problems faced by professionals and also to give them the benefit of the knowledge and experience of the eminent faculties.

I would request one and all to suggest ways and means for improvement of educative activities by the Association. In my next communication to you, I would deal with the future plans in greater detail. Till then, enjoy the monsoon.

Tushar P. Joshi
Incoming President
