Protectors or predators

The scenes from Bhagalpur shown on T.V. yesterday of Bhagalpur Police (of the infame of blinding alleged dacoits in prison in 1979-1980 some years back as shown on the T.V.) have now reported their cruelty against a helpless and apparently poor young man by beating him and tying him to their motor cycle and dragging him on the road, were unbearable to watch. The young man is alleged to have pulled a golden chain from the neck of a person. The public were already punishing him by beating him mercilessly for his alleged crime.

Instead of rescuing him from the public assaults and summary punishing, the police also joined them in cruelly beating the alleged thief. Is there any rule of law in our country? Are the public and the police to be themselves the judges of the alleged crime, instead of the courts of law and also punish him cruelly? Has cruelty no limits?

The Bihar Government should file criminal cases against the police and the public who took law in their hands.
